Data Assessments

Data Storytelling Readiness Assessment

We've performed an example data audit for one campus of the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill campus, Barbados), creating a resource kit of datasets, data producers, and potential data stories.

This audit has been been framed around readiness for data story-telling. The audit is being performed by two members of our team, George Helliar and [Christina Howitt].

Data-handling needs assessment

This survey is a diagnostic tool we’ve developed to assess how data is collected, managed, shared, and protected across the Caribbean, with a focus on attitudes, practices, and barriers to data sharing. It covers key areas such as current data management practices, organizational support, skills gaps, infrastructure limitations, and concerns around privacy and data misuse. We’re administering it to National Statistics Offices (NSOs) in Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago to capture an honest, end-of-project snapshot of institutional readiness, confidence, and capacity in the evolving landscape of regional data sharing.

Although the survey comes late in the project timeline, it offers critical value for sustainability and future scaling. It allows us to evaluate how NSO perspectives and capabilities have shifted during CaribData’s implementation and to document lessons learned from their engagement. By capturing these insights now, we can refine our roadmap for regional data collaboration, identify persistent gaps that require long-term investment, and build a compelling evidence base for future funding proposals. Endline assessments are common in development work, often serving as a key component of adaptive learning and continuous improvement frameworks (OECD DAC, 2021)1. In this way, the survey supports the legacy of CaribData by informing next steps—whether through future training, policy support, or the expansion of the data infrastructure network to new countries.
